A gorgeous exhibit titled, Floating World by Karen LaMonte is located in the Rowland Galleries(August 11-September 24, 2017). Life-sized kimonos cast in glass, ceramic, bronze and rusted iron, was a visual feast for the eyes. The pieces, posed as though bodies were in them, present a graceful history in the art of the kimono and the exploration of beauty.
I’m always amazed at the number of art galleries that are offered for free that we, locals and tourists, fail to take advantage of.
A wonderful museum for a city the size of Madison. Well run, clean, and new exhibits. Might not be the best for young children though. Parking can be difficult so be prepared to cross a busy street to get here. Multi level but they do have elevators. Staff was well informed on the art work on display.
Awesome art museum in Madison. I am glad we made the decision to visit it as we had a blast.
Overall: Backpacks of any size are not allowed in the museum. Lockers are provided as well as a quarter to use them. The gift shop is located on the main level. This was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
The remaining 20,000 pieces in its permanent collection showcases Contemporary Glass and Ceramics, European & American 19th and 20th-Century works, Asian and African to name a few. The art gallery as a whole is beautifully designed, allowing light and space to accentuate its pieces.
Spacious and clean, the Chazen Museum of Art is a treasure tucked away in the downtown area of Madison, Wisconsin. It offers four gallery floors of various works and periods.
I never write reviews, but this time felt I should. If you have young children (mine ranged from 4-8), this is not your best choice. We were pretty literally followed by 1 or 2 security guards the whole time. I get it - they have a job to protect the art. I was already on high alert and keeping the kids as controlled as possible but I ended up in tears about 15 minutes in from continual reprimands to me directly and to my children right in front of me and directly after I had just told them to stop. On top of that, a lot of the art is... well... naked. And some is just bizarre, or weird, or grotesque. Again. I get it - it's art. Express yourself. But for young children a lot of the art surprised them. In a bad way. They do, however, have some beautiful things and a fair collection of old pieces (paintings, vases, sculptures, etc). Our favorites were the collections of glass works they had. Truly impressive. If you're looking for kid friendly places, I suggest IW-Madison Geological Museum (only takes a couple hours but SOOOO cool!) or Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Went in November and it was still beautiful. I don't know if it's so kid friendly in the summer when it's busier but we had a grand time. And those are both free too.
Beauty in Design and Content
Beautiful building, very quiet despite being on university ave. Its a smaller art museum, but has some great exhibits and a very nice gift shop.
